Golden Island begins fleetwide B30 biofuel bunker trial, starts tests with “Double Happiness”

Golden Island is amongst the first in Singapore to test B30 biofuel for its own bunker tanker.

On 13 April 2023, Golden Island Diesel Oil Trading Pte Ltd (Golden Island) supplied B30 biofuel to Double Happiness, a 4,700 metric tonnes (mt) capacity bunker tanker operated by the company, as part of its preparations for IMO 2030/2050.

“Double Happiness received about 23mt of B30 gasoil in a truck-to-ship delivery operation at Tanjung Langsat, Malaysia,” Tomohiro Yamano, General Manager of, the Marine Fuel Department at Golden Island told bunkering publication Manifold Times.

“We wanted to confirm claims by the engine maker that our powerplant is compatible with B30 biofuel and decided to perform this trial to verify its performance.

“While B24 grade biofuel trials are common, Golden Island is amongst the first in the Singapore bunkering sector to test B30 product for its bunker tanker.”

According to Yamano, Golden Island plans to expand the B30 biofuel trial to its remaining fleet; the company operates nine vessels comprising marine fuel, oily waste disposal, and freshwater supply vessels.

“The B30 biofuel trial for the entire fleet will be a temporary one-off affair as the ships will return to consume marine gas oil (MGO) after tests,” informed Yamano who added that the company is planning to conduct future loadings of B30 biofuel from Singapore port to support trials.

“IMO 2030/2050 is near and the MPA (Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore) has published “Maritime Singapore Decarbonisation Blueprint” to identify carbon reduction targets for the local bunkering sector.”

The document, amongst others, requires all Singapore domestic harbour craft to achieve a 15% reduction in absolute emissions from 2021 levels by 2023, and a 50% reduction in absolute emissions from 2030 levels by 2050.

Earlier in March, MPA published a factsheet: ‘Strengthening Singapore’s Competitiveness as a Hub Port and International Maritime Centre’, which included local schemes for reducing carbon emissions.

MPA has also prepared a provisional national standard on specifications of marine biofuel (WA 2:2022) to allow local bunker suppliers to supply biofuel within the Port of Singapore,” stated Yamano;

“We are simply preparing for the future.”

Golden Island: First to digitalize bunkering operations with 100% e-BDN workflow from 1 December 2023

‘We believe Golden Island is amongst the first, or even the first, in the Singapore bunkering sector to fully switch to e-EDN,’ says General Manager Tomohiro Yamano.

Singapore bunker supplier Golden Island Diesel Oil Trading Pte Ltd (Golden Island) will be fully adopting the electronic Bunker Delivery Note (e-BDN) for commercial bunkering operations from 1 December 2023 onwards, learned Manifold Times.

“We are planning to stop issuing physical BDNs from 1st December as part of our company digitalization initiative,” said Tomohiro Yamano, General Manager at Golden Island.

“We believe Golden Island is amongst the first, or even the first, in the Singapore bunkering sector to fully switch to e-EDN for supporting marine fuel delivery operations.”

According to Bunker Programmer Sam Kang, Golden Island started its first internal e-BDN trial using the solution from BTS Pte Ltd (a wholly-owned subsidiary of ZeroNorth) on 2 November 2022.

“BTS has a deep understanding of the bunker industry and our specific requirements, facilitating a seamless workflow that greatly enhances the productivity and efficiency of our marine fuel delivery operations,” said Kang.

The company is now ready to adopt e-BDN into its operations after a year’s worth of testing the solution together with assistance from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

“We initially encountered challenges such as crews’ resistance to new technologies, data network firewalls from client’s internal ship systems, and connectivity issues when out at sea,” he shared.

“However, solutions were found when everybody worked together.

“Crew was won over by the increased efficiency offered by e-BDN, firewalls were overcome after discussion between IT engineers from various sides, and connectivity issues were solved through the use of 5G/4G/LTE networks.”

Yamano, meanwhile, expects the implementation of e-BDN to save at least two hours of manual data entry work for involved personnel per day.

“e-BDN will be much more efficient for Cargo Officers. Additionally, using electronic documents means we will be saving paper which is good for the environment,” he said.

“Our frontline crew who are already experienced through participation in the trials are now familiar with using e-BDN. The next step is training for the backend staff who will be integrating the e-BDN system into their own workflow.”

Manifold Times in late October reported the MPA issuing Port Marine Circular No 12 of 2023 which outlines guidelines for the use of digital bunkering services for the bunker supplier, bunker craft operator, and the vessel receiving bunkers as well as a sample of the e-BDN issued in Singapore.
